The Independence Day. It’s been many decades that India has broken the
shackles of slavery and has emerged as the world' largest democracy. Since
independence India has witnessed many metamorphic changes in all domains. The
Indian youth has broken all the stereotypical myths associated with being
Indian by roots. Today Indian youth is making incredible progress in each
spheres of life - politics, education, industry, agriculture, etc. India being
an amalgamation of many cultures is still evolving in terms of its values.
beliefs, perception and is keeping pace with the world. Through all these years
our Bible document - our Constitution too has undergone many amendments,
showing our adaptability to change. The recent amendments are proofs of we
being open to change, as we the citizens of the republic India understand the
fact that 'change is permanent'.
We have changed. Sorry! Seriously? Yes, we have. We have progressed. But
this progress has disparity. We talk about rights, equality, and secularism and
so on one hand but than in the same set of population we have people, who are
deprived of their basic rights, face inequality and injustice on many grounds.
I guess independence is not the only thing we as citizens need in today'
time. With independence and freedom there should be responsibility. Responsibility
while we speak, acts, labels others and represent our motherland.
I dream of a land where there would be equality and justice. Where there
would be rationality. Where lame thinking would not stop our girls to opt to
wear dress of their choice. Where sex won’t be a taboo topic to discuss with
children. Where being gay would be legal and normal and that they too would be
allowed to live and be 'happy and gay'. Where education would reach across all
sections, class and castes. Where reservation would not be the only action of
social inclusion and upliftment where everyone would be free spirit.
We should thank our martyrs and freedom fighters for the freedom and
independence that we are breathing today. Though we are united by nationality
we need to be united further on humanitarian grounds. I can’t afford to miss
quoting Rabindranath Tagore at this point 'where the mind is without fear and
the head is held high...my father let my country awake'. And that day is not
too far.
India will shine and emerge as the brightest star amongst all soon. We just
have to realize that it’s cool to be Indian!!!!
